Installing Windows 10 May 2020 Update via Windows Insider Program

At the time of updating this article (August 2020), Windows 10 May 2020 edition has been released to most users, but — if you are using an older version of Windows 10 and want to upgrade using the Windows Insider Program, maybe because you want to run Ubuntu on Windows 10 with WSL2, here is how to do it.

First, you need to sign up for the Windows Insider Program.

This is quite easy, get on Settings and Select Windows Insider Program, then link an account:

Once you link the account, you can chose different speed: Slow and Fast. Slow is my choice as I’d rather not have a full Windows Update run once or twice per month on my main PC, so here are my settngs:

Once you are a Windows insider, open Windows Update and you should see the insider build ready to install. Get going with the installation and at the end you will be on the right build. Mine is 19041.207 (which should be the final build ready for release, according to this Windows blog post) as per winver below:

If you decide to stop getting previews, just enable this option on the Windows Insider settings page, you will remain on the May 2020 update which will be officially released soon:
